Greta Von Dahl Interview

Greta Von Dahl reminds me of myself. This tattooed, pink-and-white-haired rebel is all about the tough front as she grinds out irreverent guitar chords and spits curt phrases and indignations in your face, but underneath all that toughness lies a tender heart. Greta Von Dahl is more than just a doll. She’s a modern day heroin.
When I first came across The Fük Dahls’ MySpace page last year I was immediately smitten. I found four real characters right out of a cartoon, each with their own interesting look and demeanor. They have a fun collection of photos from the 2009 Sunset Music Festival here in West Hollywood, but when I tried to contact Greta for an interview I couldn’t get through. Little did I known, she’d disappeared. I feared the worst, but alas, she reached back to me and just days ago, she granted me an interview in my home.
The band is comprised of Greta Von Dahl, the founder and guitar player; Eve Zen (nickname EZ), the lead vocalist; Anastasia, the bass player; and Jessie, the drummer. Each have their own distcinst style apart from their instruments. Greta drinks heavily and claims to have an endorsement with Mad Dog 20/20. She had a bottle with her during the interview. EZ is pretty and is not afraid of showing off her beautiful blonde locks and tan gams. Anastasia is a witch, and until I get an interview I don’t know more than that, but she does wreak of enchantment and witchcraft with the exotic goth look of heavily made-up pale skin under raven and crimson-streaked hair. (I wouldn’t want to get on her bad side.) And then there’s Jessie. She is transgender and proud, boasting a transgender symbol tattooed in rainbow colors on her upper left arm. According to a profile picture on their page, “Jessie beats the crap out of the drums,” and actually, “she likes to beat the crap out of everything.” Four raucous babes with a very distinct bite!
I regret that the interview is so short, as my interviews tend to be a bit longer, but I caught Greta on a drunken day after reemerging from a long drinking binge, so I’m grateful for what I got. And, I don’t mind saying, I hope she gets sober. I share with her a love for the drink, but I predict their success could be monumental. If their lone song, “I Wasn’t Made To”, is any indication, they are in for a lot of attention and a grand ride on the wild side, if they can choose their wildness in favor of rebellion… with a cause. The song is haunting and sweet, reminiscent of my own identity struggles and the fight to be treated like an important being in this world. It is at once angry, gentle and heartbreakingly desperate. It is endearing, it is Greta, it is The Fük Dahls.
And now, Greta Von Dahl…
