Diane Feinstein and Gun Rights

This blog predominantly revolves around sex work (in case you hadn’t noticed). Because I’m much more of a “make love not war” kinda gal, I tend to leave gun talk to other people, though I, myself, own guns and have taken several hours worth of gun safety courses in case I should ever have need of one. People can go on and on about reasons not to own a gun, but I prefer the Carl Sagan approach. I own a gun for the many reasons I can’t think of–borrowed/paraphrased from Contact.

Doug wrote a response on his blog to a Senate hearing clip featuring Diane Feinstein. I won’t repost it here because it can really only be absorbed properly by watching the video and then reading his text [ink here]. I will say this, Doug doesn’t repeat information he hears peripherally. He spends hours reading and informing himself so that when he speaks about a subject, he knows what he’s talking about.

What I am actually interested in posting here–aside from linking to his thoughts about Diane Feinstein–is how similar our goals our, albeit in different areas. We both passionately champion free speech in our own way. This was never more clear than when I responded to someone on FaceBook; someone I usually only correspond with on adult-related topics. This is someone I have no beef with and who has no beef with me, yet seemed to get upset about the gun issue in general. I won’t repost his FaceBook comment, but I will post mine because I think the statement is pretty clear without his comment as a lead-in. I have listened to Doug talk about gun-related issues for so long that my mind instantly made the proper connection.

“While I understand wholeheartedly what you’re saying, his reasoning over being offended by Feinstein regarding guns is similar to my reasoning over being offended by Gail Dines regarding porn. By being over-broad with language about what constitutes “assault weaponry”, what she is really seeking to do is make banning any kind of gun possible, whether she knows it or not. That kind oversight sets a dangerous precedent in defining what’s harmful and what’s not when statistics show that actual assault weapons do less harm than prescription medication. People who don’t own guns–people like you and me–are ill-equipped to set laws when they don’t even know the language around guns or their statistics. People like Feinstein, when they get their way, will not stop with “assault weapons” anymore than anti-pornographers would stop with certain types of pornography. These people sit in an ivory tower and use emotion and the trauma of actual victims to stifle the rights of citizens of this country. If people who don’t worship either party do not defend logic and point out what is evident, the agenda-driven politicians on either side will take advantage. Doug is neither a Democrat nor a Republican, he’s just a responsible gun owner and he’s done his research.”

I hope Doug writes much more about guns and gun laws. He knows quite a bit and it is all very enlightening.
