To reiterate, this isn’t a professional study. Just some (I think) valuable questions for anyone who fancies themselves a porn fan.
There are a few female Q&A’s on the way, and I added “Fan Q&A” to the Category list on the right.
Hello Count!
What kind of porn do you prefer?
Girl/Guy porn to Hentai [Japanese animation porn]. Not really into Girl/Girl or harder porn (does not mean I hate agressive porn but porn where you see crazy things like a girl getting a bat shoved in her vagina). [Ouch!]
Are there types of pornography that cross a line for you?
Porn that is just too violent.
What is your preference as far as seeing condoms in porn?
Moderate on it, if the condom is shown too much then it can turn me off. It loses the fantasy element.
If you prefer not seeing condoms in porn, does knowing that condoms may enhance performer safety alter your preference?
No, because I know for certain the industry has some good protocols in place. Also porn legend Nina Hartley did suggest that with the long hours of sex the condom could break.
What do you know about existing performer safety protocols?
I know that the performer needs to be tested every month. When they are producing a scene, the producer checks for any sexual diseases.
Are you familiar with the condom mandate?
Yes. It is a law that came to LA County last year.
What is your understanding of the condom mandate?
My understanding is that in LA County every porn production needs to have a condom on every set. The county has people to look and see if the production is following the mandate.
What do you think about fetishes? BDSM?
I do not mind if anyone has fetishes but some stuff seems strange. Like I saw on kink.com some women peeing on each other (gross). I also find BDSM very boring. I enjoy looking at people having sex, not people hitting skin [flogging]. Honestly that is why I do not like Girl/Girl scenes where there is no guy around. ![]()
I hope that did not sound gay but I enjoy the fantasy of thinking that the guy is me having sex with the girl, even though I know that sex is not how real people have it ((for the most part that’s why I love MakeLoveNotPorn.tv for my real sex fix)).
Do you feel you use porn in moderation? Your porn use is too frequent, or in any way unhealthy? Don’t really think about it?
I use it in moderation. There are a couple of times when I go weeks on end with out it. BUT it all has to do with whether I feel horny or not. Really I think of it as a sex toy. It’s only there when I feel like I need some extra pick-me-up for my masturbation sessions (I cannot enjoy porn without playing with myself).
Do you feel porn has helped you in your relationships? Hindered your relationships? Neither? In what way?
I actually have not been in a relationship for most of my life. This has nothing to do with porn but my lack of social skills. Porn at least lets me enjoy sex without trying to go out and grab the next girl and get her pregnant (even thought I have singed up for some adult dating sites, but if there is no girl, then no big deal.)
Are there types of porn you consider offensively racist?
A lot of black performer porn has some awfully racist undertones. Sometimes I skip those.
What criticisms do you have about the adult industry?
My criticisms are:
1. Porn needs to try to find a way to balance the fantasy side and the real sex side. The industry needs to show more of the real side of sex. Have people who are not dolled up or have big boobs or big dicks. Let’s see normal-looking people having normal sex. (MLNP is the best site with real people posting their sex sessions. Boy do I sound like a promotion guy!).
2. Please stop with the scene locations in the kitchen or bathroom. Tthose are the places I eat and go to the bathroom (only time I am okay with it is if it is a shower scene).
3. Can I have one porn film without a preview of scenes in the credits? That takes away the fantasy of the scene. I don’t want to know how the scene will be, I would love to guess.
What criticisms do you have about the adult industry?
Thank you, Count!
Hentai… you’ve taught me something.
I, too, do not like violent porn. I can’t stand samples of sex scenes in the credits. It’s not creative at all. And for goodness’ sake, drop the music if it’s going to sound cheesy. What’s the point? I’d rather there be no music than flat weird music that in no way enhances the scene.
I was not aware of MLNP. That’s a great title. (lol)
I have one big criticism that I tried to express a few years ago. It was a long moody thing, but it has to do with how key industry organizations seem to collectively make every attempt to ride the coattails of whichever performer is getting the most mainstream notoriety.
For instance, not many people liked Jenna Jameson back in the day. In her book she paints herself as a brat, though there is no denying she has star quality. She comes off as generally unappreciative and entitled, though her only real skill would appear to be looking attractive while having sex. That skill set is an ill fit when paired with an elitist air, in my opinion. That probably sounds harsh, but it doesn’t gel, if that makes any sense? Ron Jeremy gels with porn stardom because he knows how to laugh at himself and he knows how to appeal to another person’s humanity. He doesn’t act like he’s better than anybody else (even if he may actually feel that way). He’s approachable and that’s definitely part of his charm.
Regardless of what people actually thought about Jenna, every opportunity to thrust her into the limelight was made. I guess the equivalent would be if the mainstream movie industry were so desperate to be considered relevant in foreign affairs that they clamored to book Angelina Jolie to host every award show and attend every party or event the industry had scheduled. I understand it can be a money-driven thing, but posturing your industry as if you’re clawing your way up from a dungeon-like existence in order to bask in the light of someone else’s star wreaks of desperation. No one openly criticized Jenna, and there are plenty of wonderful, articulate people in porn to celebrate. Now that James Deen is featured in The Canyons (and possibly an upcoming Fifty Shades of Grey), everyone is preparing to overexpose him in the adult community and claw their way up his back.
I don’t know Deen. He’s not everyone’s personal taste, but at times he seemed likable and decent in interviews. Then he very bizarrely accepted the Best Male Performer of the Year Award at AVN 2013 with his back to the audience. Not long after that, he made some kind of religious-righteous/racist statement in The Jewish Daily Forward, stating that ‘Jews are better than everyone else because they are the Chosen People’. Is it just me or is that a fanatical statement? I get the same uneasy feeling when Christians go off about…well, religious things. It’s a cult-feeling fear that comes with the need to back far, far away. Regardless, it seems precisely the kind of blindly egotistical attitude that would cause someone to accept an award with a drink in one hand and a cigarette in the other–back to their audience and peers. Bizarre.
Anyway, Adult industry gossip site, AdultFYI.com, has been the only adult-related news outlet to really highlight these things at all (contributor “Sean” chastised the award incident in a funny, matter-of-fact way here–NSFW). But again, people think it’s shitty behind closed doors, yet no other adult outlet is coming out and tactfully saying anything about it. You know, it’s as harmful to not be critical as it is to be overwhelmingly critical to the point of retaliation. It’s human nature for performers to start reading their own press. You mentioned Nina Hartley. She is Jewish, but she’s also Buddhist and would never say something that might alienate her fans and make them feel beneath her. It’s a difficult thing to articulate, but why important industry representatives with the means to highlight anyone they want would rain their attention upon people capable of turning their back on the industry–either figuratively, or literally–I’ll never understand.
Beyond that, it seems the agents these days are leeches. Jim South of World Modeling received a flat fee from the companies that hired me. He never took a percentage of my pay. Now, not only do these agents take a flat fee and a percentage, they make performers sign contracts. I never signed a contract for agent representation. Agents are supposed to work for the performers. It’s pretty screwed up in this down economy. There is so much to the agent situation that bothers me, but I will save that for one long essay!
I apologize if that’s a little too detailed to understand, but thank you for asking the question, and thank you for your answer contributions, Count!!
