Lights, Camera, Sex! – a review

I love reading and reviewing books. I actually owned this book in 2005 because a fan read that I had written a collection of short stories and wanted to flood my P.O. Box with literature. He sent Pornstar by Ian Gittler, The Secret Lives of Hyapatia Lee by Hyapatia Lee and Lights, Camera, Sex! by Christy Canyon. Someone must have stolen Christy’s book because I know he sent it and yet, I can’t find it. If you’re into stealing books, this a good book to steal.

I know I love a book when I can’t think of anything to say except that it’s really good. There are a ton of typos, but it doesn’t matter because Christy Canyon comes through so clearly and candidly that I breezed right past them to continue reading.

I’m really into porn star bios and autobiographies right now. I have read three and, so far, this one is my favorite. It’s simply surprising and wonderful. Christy is hysterical! I snorted when she talked about finally telling her father why she wasn’t interested in pursuing a serious relationship with Beverly Hillbillies star Max Baer. There were so many unexpected moments like that, I was laughing so loud Doug was commenting on it from the other room.

Christy Canyon has the kind of attention to detail that makes for enjoyable reading. I was transported through the 70′s and 80′s with regular glimpses at Hollywood, passing fashions and the adult industry. Her emotional observations about family and relationships are candid and never overdone. Her voice reads loud and clear that self-awareness is the greatest personal achievement one can attain, regardless of where our life’s path might find us.

I hope she publishes the promised sequel Danger, Curves Ahead. I will be one of the first to buy it!

  1. This sounds like a great read. Christy Canyon is a true legend in the industry and no doubt has some fascinating stories. Plus, based on what you stated here, it sounds as if she is an entertaining storyteller as well.

Gittler’s “Pornstar” was showcased on a 1999 episode of E! True Hollywood Story profiling 90s superstar Savannah (seeing that show is actually how I initially became interested in the adult industry. If I recall correctly, Savannah is the book’s cover girl) and I always thought it looked good.

Bios and autobiographies about porn performers are indeed very interesting. I am actually reading “Golden Goddesses” by Jill Nelson at the moment, which profiles 25 starlets of adult’s Golden Age, and it is fantastic.

  2. A friend went to the first evening Golden Goddesses book signing at the Hustler of Hollywood and said it was a trip. Victoria Paris, Veronica Hart, Ginger Lynn, Amber Lynn, Debi Daimond, Nina, Christy, Annie Sprinkle, Serena, Rhonda Jo Petty, Kay Parker, Kitten Natividad, Kelly Nichols and Sharon Mitchell.

Thanks for reminding me. I will have to read that book, as well.

  3. Great photos – yes, based on everything I’ve seen about the signings, it certainly appears that they went very well and were a huge deal. Both Jill’s new book and her previous biography on John Holmes are very comprehensive and well-researched and her status as an industry historian is well-earned and deserved.
