What’s wrong with being a whore?
There’s a reason why “whore” is such a powerful word. It’s moving, loaded with feeling and really very beautiful. I used to hate it because of the way people use it, but now that I understand why they use it that way, I love it.
We are so advanced as a race that sex has become a useful function beyond making babies. It’s a source of relief, therapy, connection and artful expression for many people. Some people like making money providing sexual service to others. They enjoy it. It’s their choice and it should be the right they have to make a living doing something that they love. We can pay money to watch two men beat each other to a pulp, but we are offended that two consenting adults want to engage in a physically and financially profitable exchange? It doesn’t make any sense.
It doesn’t matter what points get thrown around, it all comes down to human rights, and which humans don’t want other humans to have them.
A man who calls himself “Maymay” sent links to his blog: Divinity’s transcribed video about Donna M. Hughes and more information about Donna M. Hughes. Maymay writes very eloquently about about sex-negativity. I have a lot of reading to do.
It seems to me that this woman, Donna M. Hughes, wants to succeed in the “man’s world.” Fortunately, it is a world for everyone – men, women and transgender. Is sex slavery a bad thing? Yes. Forcing yourself on others is not right, but confusing the issues isn’t right, either. It is just another form of force and manipulation. Choice is important. Choice in everything. Confusing the issues is just another tactic to trick human beings out of their rights, but it is simple and always will be. The power to choose is what makes life worth living. A correct and thorough education is the best preparer for making those choices.
Some people want to mix sex worker rights with abortion issues, but an educated and informed person who doesn’t want to have babies doesn’t get pregnant. I can’t envision that there are women who intentionally get pregnant just so they can cackle all the way to the clinic because the intention is to take a human life. I’m for abortion because there are always extenuating circumstances, and uneducated and uninformed people who get into situations for which they are not prepared. Rape being the most extreme case. I do not believe a woman who already has no feeling for a child in her womb should be forced to let the baby grow and nurture indifference towards the child, even if she will give it away for adoption. But the ideal is that abortion not be necessary. Educated and well-informed people deal with their anger in healthy ways, they don’t rape others, and they are less likely to accidentally get pregnant.
A woman has natural power in this world. She is a potent source of sexuality and life. It is a gift, but as with all gifts, it is also a curse because men and women will always hate her for knowing her own power. That is why she is called a whore. She knows it, she uses it, and it scares people who want it or wish they had it, even if her choices have nothing to do with those people. Sex work can be safe and healthy, or it can be illegal and dangerous. We should be protecting all members of our society, including the beautiful and powerful women. A sex worker — properly trained for sex work — can be an educator and source of liberation for others. A friend of mine told me that as a young man, he picked the female with the most sexual experience and had her teach him everything. He had successful relationships after that because he acquired skill through mindfulness that many men never learn because they don’t pay attention. But more than that, a compassionate sex worker can provide emotional and mental soothing for clients, or teach couples things they can do together through instruction. I spent many hours as an escort just talking to clients, listening to their problems and assuring them that the stresses of their daily life are common and that they shouldn’t be too hard on themselves. With an education in therapy and counseling, coupled with the confidence that comes with providing a legal service, I could have thrived as someone capable of physical and mental and emotional therapy. They are all important.
What’s wrong with being a whore? The people who strip her humanity away from her and tape her mouth closed. Other than that, nothing.

BEAUTIFULLY written! Sex therapy is ancient and amazing! It’s so sad that or Christianized world has split woman into two with this Madonna/Whore dichotomy. Any woman who embrasses BOTH halves of herself and demands to be whole has a hard road. But the more of us that do it…the easier it will be for others in the future.

Thanks for the links to my blogs. I’ve been following yours from a short distance for a while, but missed this. Since you imply that you’ll be reading more of my writing (you might find this post or this post particularly good follow-ups to the ones you linked), I’d like to invite you to drop me a line via email (this comment should provide my address to you), as I’d be very interested in your perspectives.
Viva, female power!
